7 Reasons You’re Experiencing Yellowing Teeth

May 4, 2022

Let’s face it: we take our health and appearance for granted, until something like stinky breath or yellowing teeth hits us. We don’t notice them getting yellower and yellower by the day, until one day a comment or close look in the mirror makes you realise you’ve got a mouth full of cheese. How do teeth become yellow, and what can you do about it?

Here are the main causes of yellow teeth:

  1. Dental Hygiene

Enamel is like armor for your teeth. Poor hygiene in the dental department will wear down your enamel. Added to this, the second layer, which is dentin, will become exposed. Dentin is yellowish in color, so erosion of enamel caused by either diet or other factors will contribute to the yellowing of your teeth.

  1. Smoking

Aside from the obvious risks of cancer, smoking and using tobacco products is arguably the leading cause of yellowing teeth. Tobacco will leave strong brown stains that soak into the enamel of your teeth. It is impossible to treat tobacco stains on teeth by brushing alone, and the longer you’ve smoked the deeper the stain.

  1. Foods & Beverages

Tea and coffee are also common suspects when it comes to yellowing teeth. Wine and alcohol also contribute greatly, and sugary drinks are even worse. Surprisingly, some fruits and vegetables can cause teeth staining, because of their dark colors. Examples include beets and berries. You’ll really want to try brush or rinse your teeth well after eating these foods.

  1. Genetics

Teeth colour is genetically determined, and there are four natural shades amongst the human population: reddish brown, reddish yellow, gray, and reddish gray. If your parents’ teeth appear yellower and yellower as they age, it’s likely yours will too, as this is a genetic trait passed down through your family.

  1. Bruxism

Bruxism, or grinding your teeth, is also a leading cause of tooth enamel decay and therefore teeth yellowing. It’s an unconscious habit some people have when stressed, and usually occurs when the stressed-out individual is asleep. Bruxism can actually weaken your tooth enamel to the point of cracking (not to mention yellowing).

  1. Fluorosis

Fluorosis is caused by excessive use of fluoride, and can be identified as small yellow or brownish yellow spots forming on the teeth. Fluoridated water and fluoride toothpaste are your biggest sources of fluoride found in consumer products. Consult with your dentist if you think you might have flourosis. While fluoride is good for teeth, using it excessively is unhealthy.

  1. Accidents

An accident where your head suffers an impact can crack your tooth enamel and cause damage to your tooth’s interior. This can lead to discoloration, which indicates internal bleeding. In these cases, it’s definitely advised to consult with a dental professional.
